Hello, I really love what you do. But I have a question- how do you not believe in God when what you do is the essence of Him? In His Love, Buffy

This is a question I’ve gotten a few times, so I’ll answer hopefully in a way that will not make anyone angry.

Basically, I have come to terms with the fact that humans know oh so very very little about this here existence of ours. The mere fact that we are making discoveries of monumental proportions every day, such as that of new galaxies, new life forms, new subatomic particles and quantum physics in general, proves that we are looking at this universe through a peephole covered in opinion, bent by perspective and as brilliantly tiny as we are. I can’t possibly bring myself to believe that we know for sure that this was all created by an all powerful being whom resembles us and controls everything. That’s just a bit too self-centered. If there is some all powerful entity, I’m sure it would be so far beyond our ability to understand that we wouldn’t be able to stomach it in any possible way. And it definitely would not look like us.

My second argument is that oftentimes I find that religious people are doing amazingly wonderful things (working at homeless shelters, food drives, raising money for underprivileged people in both this country and others, etc.) which is awesome, but they are doing it for selfish reasons. My second-most problem with religion is that people are doing good because they have the fear of god put into them. No one should be doing amazingly good and kind things out of fear of going to a bad place after death. I’ve heard from multiple religious people that they are being kind so that god will look down on them kindly and reward them.

I’m not saying that every religious person acts this way, but this is, in essence, the reason why a lot of religious people act in good ways. They fear for themselves. And that is the exact opposite of what I am trying to spread.

I want people to perform acts of kindness and love because they want to spread kindness and love, not because they want to go to heaven. I want people to approach kindness in a selfless manner, to create a mindset in which people worry about the well-being of their fellow man and strive to help each other. Spreading love for the sake of love, in my mind, is a much better reason that for the sake of the salvation of a soul.
